A Women’s Entrepreneurship Day special

November 19th is observed as Women’s Entrepreneurship Day (WED.) On this day the work of Women Entrepreneurs is observed, discussed and celebrated. Women’s Entrepreneurship Day was started by a private organization Women’s Entrepreneurship Day Organization (WEDO), a philanthropic organization with a mission and movement to empower women and girls globally and impact poverty worldwide. The inaugural event for WED was held in 2014 at the United Nations in New York City and was also replicated in several countries across the world. Since then the WEDO has come a long way and this year launched a unique digital campaign called #ChooseWomen Reading about these efforts and events prompted me to think about my favourite women entrepreneurs and how they have arisen, grown and doing so much for the community and environment they live in.

It should come as no surprise then that some of my favourite products and the brands featured in this list. It is also so inspiring to think that it is a woman who primarily conceived and set up these businesses. Without further ado, let me introduce you to Meghna Norean from Shomota, Chinmayie Bhat from Soul, Pallavi Utagi from Superbottoms and Anjali Gulati from PeopleKonnect.

#FridayFotoFiction: Room, for Rent

Shantu woke with a start. He had kicked her again. This time she screamed. “Stop this pain now,” she yelled at sister Mary. “Just a few more hours,” Mary said.

Shantu must have passed out because when she woke up she had an unbearable pain in her stomach and was back in her hospital bed. “Looks like it’s out” she mumbled.

Shalini walked into her room, handing over a blue envelope, “Here’s the balance payment. We had to do a c-section to get the baby out. You can go home tomorrow.”

Shantu took the envelope, “It was a boy wasn’t it?”

“Yes,” said Shalini “Your hunch was right as always.”

“Just simple probability actually – 2 girls and 2 boys. Nature knows its balance.” retorted Shantu as Shalini waved goodbye.

“Dr Prasad, I have the 50 lakhs now” Shantu spoke into her phone “When can we plan my mother’s kidney transplant?”

Surrogacy is a Godsend for couples who can’t have children due to fertility or health issues. For the couple, receiving a child is a blessing indeed. But for the surrogate mother, surrogacy is much-needed income, most often to meet severe financial crises. It is not easy giving up a child you’ve harboured and nurtured for 9 months. But the good wishes & blessings that you receive in return go a long way in valuing the efforts the surrogate mother puts in.

Why I love Online Shopping for kids-wear

Online shopping has come of age today and if there is a product that can be even thought of, it will be available online. With babyT everything that I ever used or made him wear has been bought online. In fact, I think if I ever walked into a brick and mortar store for kids-wear I wouldn’t have a clue how to shop. This took me back to his newborn days where I was drowning in all my hormonal swirls and being a breastfed baby meant I couldn’t really be away from babyT for long periods of time. At times like these, it was online shopping that saved the day for me.

Shopping online for kids-wear especially has been a blessing because it is super convenient, offers an unimaginable variety of clothes, facilitates comparison as per whatever criteria you have for selection and the cherry on the cake is the exemplary customer service that the e-retailers offer. Mommy’s Magic Box: Pampering new moms

Having a baby is fun. Pregnancy usually starts with lots of ups and downs, at least it did for me. The first few weeks and months were not nightmarish luckily, but I was still weak, exhausted and very hormonal. And this feeling subsided only in the last trimester by which time I was last minute cramming baby names and making lists of potential – none of which are my baby’s name today. (the actual name is a very interesting story & I shall tell you all about it someday.) For most moms-to-be pregnancy is not a fun time. And then comes baby!

Of course, you and everyone around you are happy, overjoyed and ecstatic to have the little miracle in their lives. Gifts for your baby arrive by the truckload. But what about you, the mother? You receive an envelope filled with money (yayy, not!) or clothes (with zippers down the front, bleh!) or if you are really lucky some cloth diapers (but that is technically for the baby again, hurray!) Why don’t we get exciting, thoughtful and meaningful gifts? Something that can indulge my sweet tooth perhaps yet is healthy for baby and me? (does such a thing exist? yes, it does!) My friend was telling me about how she saved so much money for her lovely baby that was on the way by switching energy providers to get a better deal. She told me the key to this was to compare energy quotes from a variety of companies on comparisons websites like SimplySwitch.Something that will help me understand this muddle of hormones & make sense of all the breastfeeding dynamics?

That’s when I heard of a gift box specially curated for moms-to-be and new moms (and dads too.) Continue reading

Winter is coming: Baby skin care tips for winter

Come November and it seems like everyone is talking about the approaching cold season. Malls and shops are putting up long sleeved clothes for sale, “Autumn-winter” reads every banner. On the TV, ads are talking about how the skin needs more intense moisturizing and how the cold weather makes skin dry & scaly. Ugh, you almost shudder when the model runs a finger across her dry skin and a line of cracked skin appears.

I personally start feeling that my skin is taut & itchy especially after a bath. It is then that I realise that it is time to switch bath and body products and add some heavily moisturizing body washes and body creams to my collection as well as look at skinpro skin care products that my friend recommends. But this year I stopped to think about my #babyT. Does his skin need any special winter skin care now that he is a toddler and running all over the place? Why, when we start changing our own products with the season, don’t we pay enough attention to the products we use for our kids?

6 Reasons Why You Must Travel With Your Mom Friends

This one is for all you mommy bloggers … or anyone with a clan of mommy friends actually!

Sun, sea, sand & soul sisters. That’s what my recent getaway to a popular beach destination, with 2 of my Mom Blogger BAEs was all about. It was the first time I was out with my gang of girls (Yep, I have never travelled with my girlies before.) I came back with the realization of how much I have missed in my youth by not travelling and I do intend to make up for it now. But the best part is, all my life I (and most of us too) made “Goa chaltey hein!” plans which NEVER worked out. This one did!! We thunk it, made it happen and went and did it and lived to tell the tale.

Event alert: Krazy Kids Karnival

As a child I remember, how the festive season would mean a lot of exhibitions being held in Mumbai. We made it a point to visit the fests every year with my mom and dad and cousins. I also remember being awed by the colourful wares on show, live displays for kitchen equipment and the variety of food stalls. However, all this was catered for grown-ups. And my eyes yearned to see things for myself. But I would only be disappointed not to find too many things on offer to excite my childlike mind. But today the scene is very different. Kids, kids and kids are the only focus of this exciting event coming up in Mumbai this November. Its even called Krazy Kids Karnival.

A Sailor went to sea sea sea: Learning about sea creatures

Babies and children’s minds are like sponges. The more you place them in suitable or conducive environments the more they learn and absorb. Look how cheekily I used the pun of a sponge on a blog post about sea creatures, but hey it is so apt here. With #babyT I did see how early exposure to flash cards helped him develop a rich vocabulary even before he turned 1.  He also enjoys reading books along with us and has picked up a lot of words and concepts from them. However, as he approaches 2, I saw how his appetite for learning was not getting satiated with just books or flashcards. He was asking for more stimulation and for learning to appeal to all his senses. Learning by touch and “doing” seemed to be the order of the day.
