Summer holidays are the time for meeting cousins and family spread across the miles. For children, meeting family, especially grandparents who live on the other side of the world is a joy incomparable to no other. Sadly these moments of joy also turn into heartbreak when its time to say goodbye to loved ones. I witness many such episodes of tearful goodbyes every summer or winter holidays. There is something about face to face conversations while being wrapped in the warm, comforting embrace of a grandparent. But if only it was possible to have that every day.
Julia Inserro and her family who live halfway across the globe from their own families have devised a unique way in which children can now communicate with their dear grandparents. And that is what her book, Nonni’s moon is all about.
The book is written by Julia Inserro and illustrated by Lucy Smith.
About the author – Julia
Julia Inserro is mommy to three littles. She lives abroad with her husband and a troop of cats. She is a writer, reader, photographer, and explorer. Nonni’s Moon is her first children’s book and was released in July 2018.
Main characters in the book Nonni’s Moon
Beanie is a school going girl. She lives somewhere in the Middle East with her family. Beanie really misses her favourite person Nonni.
Nonni is Beanie’s grandmother and lives on the other side of the world, “it is her bedtime” in Nonni’s morning.
Mom! Who better to understand how Beanie and Nonni feel about the distance than mom.
Other characters in the book include the twins – Beanie’s siblings, the daddy who loves reading stories to Beanie, and Miss Hala – Beanie’s teacher.
The story of Nonni’s Moon
At night when mom is tucking her into bed, Beanie confesses that she misses Nonni a lot. But mom promises her that she can talk to Nonni over the phone in the morning when it will be Nonni’s bedtime back home. In the morning Beanie gets ready for school and calls Nonni to tell her how much she misses her. Both Nonni and Beanie want to talk more and wonder if there is a way to send messages to each other every day.
In the morning Beanie has a fantastic idea and rushes to call Nonni and tell her all about it. Turns out they both have had the same idea, to send messages via the MOON.
Every night at bedtime they both promise to look at the MOON, for it is the same moon they both see and send a special message to each other. And the best part is, it works.
But one night the moon has disappeared. It’s nowhere to be seen. Is Beanie heartbroken or will she find a way to send her beloved Nonni a message full of love?
What’s special about Nonni’s Moon?
Nonni and Beanie could be two people in your family. It could even be you, a grown-up who is missing a special family member or a friend across the miles. Nonni’s Moon is a reminder to all of us that despite all the distances and spaces between us, it will always be possible to send our love to those people we miss.
I love the colours and the illustrations in Nonni’s Moon. The difference between night and day, bedtime and early morning rush and the way this is placed on adjacent pages in the book really makes the distance and time difference come alive.
I also love the way the sentences flow in a wispy, cloudlike manner. It makes it fun and interesting to read to a child.
Where can you read Nonni’s Moon?
Nonni’s Moon is available on Amazon.com and on Kindle too.
The Kindle version has been listed as Amazon’s #1 Hot New Release in their Multigenerational Families category. The paperback and hardcover version of the book just got released on 31st August and Julia very excitedly told me how “Amazon currently lists the hardback as the #1 New Release in Multigenerational Families.” A great achievement indeed.

That sounds like a wonderful book. Since we stay in a nuclear family, I could use this to help him connect with all our family members who stay in different cities and even countries.
