We spent our summer holidays in Hong-Kong. And needless to say as is the norm, we planned our trip entirely from Instagram recommendations. About a month before we travelled we searched for and bookmarked a few reels and posts about things to do, places to visit and foods to eat. Following that we received a barrage of posts full of recommendations for Hong-Kong. I guess that is the norm these days. But what stood out and soon became a mission was Egg-Tart in Hong Kong. I had to find the best one.
Hong Kong is a city where food is both an art and a tradition, and no culinary experience is complete without indulging in the iconic egg tart. From buttery shortcrust to flaky puff pastry versions, these golden delights are so irresistible that people willingly queue up for hours to taste the best. Here’s my guide to the top spots for egg tart in Hong Kong that I was able to taste and recommend.
1. Hashtag B
- Location: Tsim Sha Tsui (TST)
- Highlight: A modern hotspot famous for its picture-perfect egg tarts, Hashtag B draws crowds daily.
- Queue Factor: Be prepared to line up—it’s all part of the experience. Locals know: if you didn’t queue for it, did you even taste it? The reward is a perfectly balanced custard sitting inside a buttery crust. What makes this egg tart unique as I discovered, was the secret caramel sauce layered in the shell. A slightly burnt custard top gives it a umami more-ishness that won top spot for me. If there was one place you should not miss for egg tart in Hong Kong it would be this one.
2. Bakehouse
- Location: Central, Wan Chai, Soho, & others
- Highlight: Known for its sourdough egg tarts, Bakehouse has redefined this classic treat. The custard is silky, the crust extra flaky, and the sourdough gives it a delicious tang.
- Queue Factor: The lines here are legendary. It’s not uncommon to wait 30+ minutes, but once you take a bite of these heavenly tarts, you’ll agree—it’s worth every second.
3. Vission Bakery
- Location: Central
- Special Mention: While I didn’t try an egg-tart here, Vission Bakery’s real showstopper is the Matcha Mochi Danish. This pastry blends delicate matcha flavors with chewy mochi, offering a unique twist to traditional Hong Kong treats. It’s expensive but a large portion, and a flavour bomb, making it truly worth the money.
- Queue Factor: A cult favorite, this bakery’s popularity means you’ll often find a queue. But good things come to those who wait!
4. Catherine Bakery
- Location: Sheung Wan
- Highlight: A true local gem, Catherine Bakery keeps things simple with classic, freshly baked egg tarts. Its no-frills, authentic approach ensures a rich custard filling and delicate pastry that speaks for itself. I read that they had won a Michellin star in the past, not sure if it was for the egg tart.
5. Paper Stone Bakery
- Location: Central
- Highlight: Known for its wide variety of pastries, Paper Stone Bakery’s egg tarts are creamy, buttery, and baked to perfection—a great stop while exploring Central. The egg custard was a bit too eggy for me, a dash more of vanilla essence would have hit the spot for me.
6. Pie & Tart Specialists
- Location: TST
- Highlight: True to its name, this spot offers no-fuss, affordable tarts with a nostalgic homemade flavor. Perfect for a grab-and-go treat when you’re craving something warm and sweet. The egg-tart was too milky for my liking. Now I’m left wondering if I had the egg-tart or the milk-tart. 🙂
7. Bubble Waffles at Tai O
- Location: Tai O Village
- Highlight: While egg tarts dominate the city, the bubble waffles in Tai O are another beloved local treat. Crispy on the outside, fluffy inside, filled with custard, these make for the ultimate snack while wandering the charming streets of Tai O fishing village. Don’t miss this one if you are visiting Tai’O.
An egg tart in Hong Kong is more than just food — it’s an experience. From the most iconic bakeries to charming hidden gems, each bite tells a story of tradition, innovation, and love for good food. So, embrace the queue, savor the wait, and treat yourself to the best golden bites this city has to offer.
Now my next mission, to savour the pastel de nata in Portugal and decide which country served it best.
