Toddlers – the right age to introduce chores

One of the many parenting principles in our home that shocks friends and family is our son doing chores. He’s been at it since he was just over a year old. Some people expressed amusement, some shock and some others judged us as mean parents. But we still did chores around here.

The first few chores that we began with our son was wiping up spills, pulling dried clothes off the laundry line and putting away used plates & cups for a wash in the sink. He began with these around the time he was 1.5 years when he was walking fairly confidently. No, wait, he was pulling off dried clothes from the drying stand right from the time he was crawling.?

He felt immensely proud and useful to be doing these chores and today its second nature for him to ask for a cloth to wipe any spills or put away his plate after snack time.

A strange inheritance

You’d never believe me if I told you I was mildly telepathic, but it’s true and I can prove it. For as long as I can remember I would begin humming a song and then someone would turn a TV or the radio on and that very song would play on it. I would idly walk into the living room, not sure what I came here for, and then the phone would ring and I would answer it within half a ring. In the days of yore when our phones did not flash the name or number of the person calling, I would have a hunch whose call it was. When people began conversations with me, I cut to the chase and gave them the answer or solution they were looking for. “I was just about to ask you that, how did you know that?” was a line I heard very often. 10 Fun Summer Holiday Activities for Kids

Most schools in India are just weeks away from the start of school. While in Europe and America where babyT’s cousins live, the holidays are just around the corner. Yesterday we moms on our family Whatsapp group were discussing how the summer means absolute freedom & fun for the kids, but for us parents, it can be quite exhausting. After a messy year at the school where you are still learning how to remove ink stains from clothes (find out here) and keeping on top of feeding the hungry mouths & other housework while trying to find the right carpet stain remover to get stains off the carpet, you have to find a million ideas to entertain the kids too. All in all, it can get pretty tiring. We decided summer does not equal to fun for us moms. That’s when I decided to put together this list of 10 summer holiday activities that the whole family can enjoy.

Home cooked meals for baby – Healthy Parenting

One of the biggest side effects of parenthood for our family, if there can be such a thing, has been healthy eating. And at that, eating home cooked food. We didn’t resolve the moment we had a baby to do this but it has happened by way of us following many principles of new age parenting.

It all started when I was pregnant. The moment I broke the happy news to my mother she shipped me off to her house and home cooked 4 meals daily for me. All wholesome, with freshly bought vegetables & meats and hot off the gas to my plate. My father played his role by going to the market twice a day to buy the day’s special. My mother ensured that the crucial first trimester of my pregnancy was spent under her directive i.e. to eat right and healthy.

Then along came baby. Continue reading

An introduction to sustainable menstruation products

According to the book Flow: The Cultural Story of Menstruation, the average woman throws away 250-300 pounds of disposable period products such as pads and tampons during her lifetime. On average, it amounts to about 0.5% of the total trash thrown away by that person.

Does it make a difference to switch to reusable period products? 0.5% doesn’t really seem like a big amount. But, I’m a believer in small changes equaling a big impact on the environment. Imagine the possibilities if a reusable period product was in the hands of every single menstruating person in the world? Continue reading

Nutrilite Traditional Herbs – The secret of ancient wisdom

I am yet to meet a person who has not heard of Amway. The word is synonymous with great quality products which are supremely efficient and effective with respect to the needs they were created for. Products like Glister toothpaste, S8 detergent and the Artistry range of cosmetics have become household names with a loyal following. In recent times, Amway has been seen often on TV by way of the Nutrilite commercials. The Nutrilite range provides a range of vitamins and dietary supplements to millions of people across the world every day. And now the Nutrilite Traditional Herbs have delved into the wisdom of ancient science of Ayurveda to bring us 4 new solutions. Continue reading

“Head to toe” care with Himalaya baby wipes

Baby wipes – the word is enough to set flight to a plethora of ways in which we can use them. If I had my way I would award the “best product ever” title to baby wipes. While I have tried as much as possible to go the sustainable way and use cloth and water on most occasions, I will admit that this is not always a convenient or practical solution always, especially on the go. I have then resorted to using baby wipes.

Finding the right baby wipe is a matter of great deliberation and I invested quite some time on this when #babyT was a newborn. It was obvious that a chemically laden wipe was not going to fit the bill. We wanted something that was natural, gentle and yet did its job well. Plus it had to be versatile so that I could use it for the unimaginable messes & spills that those seemingly innocent babies can get up to. Continue reading

New beginnings, new dreams

For some funny reason, which I have failed to understand, most of the big changes in my life have happened almost overnight. From having no job post the completion of my MBA to finalizing a very reputed organization within walking distance from home almost in 2 days after arriving back home from B-school. From having no luck in the arranged marriage market to finding the man of my dreams at work and getting married to him in less than 6 months of our first date. From having a tough time conceiving to finding out we were pregnant the moment we went off all fertility treatments. You get the drift… everything has happened almost suddenly for us. No time to think or blink given. Continue reading

Children’s books to read together on Mother’s Day

The beauty of children’s books is that we get transported right back to our own childhood. Leafing through page after page of colourful illustrations and simple but meaningful words and stories lets us find a moment of joy and happiness with our children. And there is so much variety on offer when it comes to children’s books – so many themes and storylines to choose from. Take, for example, children’s books for mother’s day. Continue reading

It’s cool to walk to school

I just got back from the supermarket this evening and on the way back I saw at least some school buses entering our building compound. It was almost 7 pm. Kids trooped out of the buses, bearing a heavy school bag on their backs. They had a sullen look on their face.

This got me thinking about school and what I wanted for babyT. As any other parent would, we too want our son to study in a top-notch school and get a good education – academics as well as extracurricular activities. But there was a dearth of such schools in the suburb we lived in. He would have to travel by school bus. Continue reading
