Mommy T's adventures; bringing up Baby T

P is for Pregnancy Cravings

Well, I had no Pregnancy Cravings. No! Not one. I had no morning sickness, no queasiness, no nausea, no hyper-acidity and no CRAVINGS. Food cravings that is. And that my dear readers is NOT the end of this blog post. There is more to it.. It needs a special blog post. Oh yes it does. And I really wonder what happened to me then and how it changed almost overnight, when I was pregnant. 🙂

I dreaded my pregnancy. I had heard so many stories of morning sickness and nausea and not being able to eat anything that the foodie in me was worried that I wouldn’t be able to get a decent size meal in for 9 months of my life. But reality for me was very different, luckily. I had none of the usual troubles that many women go through and I was able to eat all the regular food I was used to. Thanks also to my mother, to whose house I was promptly packed off to the moment we knew I was pregnant. She made sure I eat well and to my hearts content and desire. She spent time and effort in planning and preparing elaborate meals for me – 3 times a day, breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Weekends meant the daddy-to-be would indulge me in cooking yummy continental fare or new recipes or call for a variety of cuisines from Mumbai’s growing food-preneurs.

Special mention goes to Bawi Bride’s Kitchen for sending scrumptious Parsi bhonu for special occasions like my birthday and anniversary celebrations. It was such a treat to have authentic Parsi food delivered piping hot to our homes. Trust me, you really need to get yourself some yummy malai prawns and dhansak.

But this blog post is not about my food cravings at all. You cannot categorize gluttony as a craving, can you? Nonetheless this post is about a rarther weird craving I had.. but before that some background.

I am a very lazy person and really care two hoots about what I look like in public. I really don’t fuss over make up and dressing up. My minimalist fashion sense included combing my hair, putting on eye kohl and a nude lip balm.  In the entire duration of a year I think I dress up only once or twice and that includes any weddings or similar events we are invited to. That’s when the foundation and lipsticks come out. So you get the drift.

But something happened to me the moment I got pregnant. I was addicted to wearing LIPSTICKS.  I would wake up each morning, brush my teeth and have breakfast and then put on lipstick. Bright red or pink lipstick. <3 I would then change the shade of lipstick post lunch and have another one set out for the evening. What was happening to me?

My stash accumulated during pregnancy

That was not all.. I began following all the fashion bloggers accounts on Instagram. I would watch endless YouTube videos on makeup and putting on lipstick. I bugged my fashion blogger friend for brands and recommendations and what shade went well with which coloured clothes. I would eagerly look forward to shopping trips to the mall where I knew there was a MAC or ColorBar counter. And a purchase at one of these made me so so happy, like a kid in a candy shop. My husband says he loved taking me lipstick shopping and how excited and happy I got when we actually did buy a new shade. D’awww!

My family went crazy looking at my painted lips day and night. Imagine the sight of a woman with a  huge tummy in an oversized night gown walking up to the lunch table and feasting on yummy mangalorean ghashis behind a veil of Mac Ruby Woo. 😀 My mother was even convinced that the lipsticks contained chemicals and all sorts of harmful stuff and I could be causing damage to my growing foetus. Other’s laughed at me. What shade are you wearing right now, became the joke of the phone calls. My fashionista friend indulged me and sent me the latest scoop on new lipstick shades. Love her! 🙂

As for me, I really did wonder what was happening to me. I sometimes wondered if it was a sign that I was having a girl (well, I did not have a girl eventually.) or that I did have a boy inside me and the flow of emotions/ hormones was making me prune and preen for HIM. And the funniest part was that the moment I delivered and was back home, my craving and affinity for lipsticks ended. The Macs and Ruby Woo’s and ColorBars have probably melted in this summer heat. But they shall be remembered always for the beautiful journey that was my pregnancy.

Ha ha that was a good read! Lucky you didn’t suffer. I couldn’t eat for 6 months unless they were food served in ONLy expensive restaurants..My husband says he must have spent at least a two grand just to feed me ..

Now that is one craving I hadn’t heard of! The only pregnancy symptom I had was an extreme case of sloth – one that I indulged by binge watching endless TV and napping whenever I felt like it.

I had a strong obsession for gulab jamuns during my pregnancy and I used to think my baby would also be inhering my sweet tooth. But it’s opposite now. He hates sweets.

    Nice Read 🙂
